Creating a Qlik Sense Client-Managed connection

This page explains how to create a source connection to a Qlik Sense Client-Managed environment using the Qlik Analytics Migration Tool. This connection enables migration of content from a self-hosted Qlik Sense environment into Qlik Cloud.

Two methods are available:

  • Method 1 — Use an existing virtual proxy already configured with JWT authentication.
  • Method 2 — Use the Qlik Analytics Migration Tool to automatically create a new virtual proxy.

Method 1: Use an existing virtual proxy

This method is applicable when a JWT-enabled virtual proxy is already configured in the Qlik Sense Client-Managed environment.

Steps

Do the following:

  1. Navigate to the Connections tab and select Qlik Sense Client-Managed.
  2. Click Create New.
  3. In the Connection Setup tab, provide the following:
    • Connection Name — A reference name for identifying the connection.
    • Qlik Sense Virtual Proxy URL — The full URL to the configured virtual proxy (for example, https://qliksense.domain.com/proxy-name).
    • API Key / JWT — The JWT associated with the configured virtual proxy. This value will be masked when entered.
  4. Click Test Connection to validate the configuration.
    • A success notification confirms the connection is valid.
    • If the test fails, verify the URL and token. The error message may provide additional details.
  5. Click Create Connection.
  6. A confirmation message will indicate successful creation, and the connection will appear in the list.

Method 2: Create a virtual proxy using the tool

This method allows the Qlik Analytics Migration Tool to create a new virtual proxy and associated JWT, without requiring one to exist beforehand.

Steps

Do the following:

  1. Navigate to the Connections tab and select Qlik Sense Client-Managed.
  2. Click Create New.
  3. On the Virtual Proxy Setup – Guide tab, review the instructions (optional).
  4. Switch to the Virtual Proxy Setup tab.
  5. In the Qlik Server URL field, enter the login URL of the Qlik Sense Client-Managed environment.
  6. Click Login to Qlik. A new tab will open prompting for authentication.
  7. After logging in, open Developer Tools (F12 or fn + F12) in the web browser.
  8. Go to the Application tab, then:
    1. Expand the Cookies section.
    2. Select the Qlik Sense domain.
    3. Copy the Cookie Name. In the Qlik Analytics Migration Tool, paste it into the Qlik Session Cookie (Cookie Name) field.
    4. Copy the Cookie Value. In the Qlik Analytics Migration Tool, paste it into the Qlik Session Cookie (Cookie Value) field.
  9. Click Retrieve users and proxies from Qlik.
    • This fetches all RootAdmin users and available proxies.
    • If the call fails, verify the cookie fields and re-authenticate if needed.
  10. In the Select Service User dropdown, select a RootAdmin user to associate with the virtual proxy.
  11. In the Select Proxy Service dropdown, select the proxy service (typically Central).
  12. Optionally, set a Virtual Proxy Name (no spaces allowed).
  13. Click Create Virtual Proxy.
    • A success notification confirms the proxy was created.
    • If unsuccessful, verify all input fields and review any error messages.
  14. After proxy creation, a JWT token will be displayed (optional to save).
  15. Click Go to Connection Setup.
    • All connection fields will be auto-filled using the proxy information.
  16. Click Test Connection to validate the setup.
  17. Click Create Connection.
  18. A confirmation message will appear and the connection will be added to the list.
