Working with custom models

Custom models are based on the custom metamodel defined by administrators from the Manage Metamodel page.

There are now two types of models in the repository:
  • Custom models are instantiations of a custom model type in the metamodel and can be populated via the UI or the REST API. They are commonly referred to as business models. They can also be considered as technical models depending on the domains of reference data or business rules.
  • Imported models are the models associated with an import bridge to be populated through the model harvesting process. These models are referred to as technical models. They can also be considered as business models when imported from business applications or Business Intelligence (BI) tools.

Users with an assigned object role with Metadata Viewing, Editing and Management capabilities are able to manage access to and update custom models.

Custom models and workflow

By default, the workflow feature is disabled for custom models.

You can enable the workflow process from the Workflow tab of the model from the repository or configuration manager.

Talend Data Catalog provides a flexible set of possible workflow and publication processes. The workflow is a prepackaged sequence of activities around object proposal, editing, review, acceptance, publishing and depreciation. You can customize the process to require only publishing activity, approval with or without review, approval and review by one or multiple users.

A custom model is affected when enabling the workflow feature, in particular for changes made to the object classes which are controlled by the workflow process.
