This type of custom attribute definition allows users to freely enter any value for
the category, without being limited to a predefined list of values.
In this
example you are working on various datasets containing customer information, for marketing
purposes. Each of these datasets usually contains information on clients from a specific
geographical zone, such as APAC, EMEA, NORAM, etc. You want to make this information on the
geographical zone available as metadata for the datasets. In order to do that, you will create
a new category of custom attribute, based on text, so that users can freely add the
geographical zone the datasets are focused on.
Procedure
From the left panel of the homepage, open the Custom attributes view.
Click the Add custom
attribute button.
In the Name field, enter
Geographical zone.
Optionally add a Description in the corresponding field.
From the Type drop-down
list, select Text.
Users will be able to enter any value, and not just choose
from a list.
Leave the Mandatory
toggle unselected.
Making a new attribute mandatory means that its value cannot be left empty for a
given dataset and you must enter a Default value in the
dedicated field. This can be useful if you were to set up an attribute with a more
sensitive status, such as a Security classification for
example.
Optionally add a Default value in the corresponding
field.
Click Validate.
Results
The new Geographical zone attribute based on free text input has been
created, and can be found in the Overview of your datasets.
