Dimension and measure limits

Each Qlik Sense visualization type enforces specific limits on the number of dimensions and measures. Many visualization types support multiple modes with different valid combinations. When a QlikView object exceeds these limits, QV2QS applies overflow resolution actions. For more information, see the Overflow_Actions worksheet in the Excel report.

Valid combinations

The following table lists every valid dimension and measure combination for each visualization type. Entries with a range (for example, 1–15) indicate that any count within the range is valid.

Visualization type Mode Dimensions Measures Notes
Bar chart Measures only 0 1–15 No dimensions.
Bar chart Single dimension 1 1–15
Bar chart Two dimensions 2 1 Grouped or stacked.
Bar chart Butterfly 1 2 Butterfly sub-mode. Non-negative values only.
Line chart Single dimension 1 1–15
Line chart Two dimensions 2 1 Second dimension limited to 12 values if continuous.
Combo chart Standard 1 1–15 Strictly 1 dimension only.
Pie chart Standard 1 1 Angle measure.
Pie chart Rose 1 2 Second measure controls radius.
Scatter plot XY 1 2 Measures map to X and Y axes. Minimum 2 measures required.
Scatter plot Bubble 1 3 Third measure controls bubble size.
Gauge Standard 0 1 No dimensions allowed.
Boxplot Single dimension 1 1
Boxplot Two dimensions 2 1 Grouped boxes.
Waterfall chart Standard 0 1–15 No dimensions. Each measure represents one bar.
Variance waterfall Standard 1 2 Viz Bundle type. Used when a waterfall source has dimensions.
Funnel chart Standard 1 1
Grid chart Standard 2 1 First dimension maps to X axis, second to Y axis.
Radar chart Standard 2 1 First dimension is series, second is spokes. Maximum 100 values per dimension. When a QlikView radar chart has only 1 dimension, QV2QS inserts a synthetic constant dimension to meet the 2-dimension requirement.
Mekko chart Standard 2 1 Negative values not supported.
Treemap Standard 1–15 1 Three or fewer dimensions recommended.
Straight table Standard 0+ 0+ No hard maximum. Minimum 1 total column (dimension or measure).
Pivot table Standard 1+ 1+ No hard maximum. Minimum 1 dimension and 1 measure.

Overflow resolution

When a QlikView object has more dimensions or measures than the target Qlik Sense visualization allows, QV2QS resolves the overflow automatically. The resolution strategy depends on the visualization type and the nature of the overflow.

Move to alternatives

Excess dimensions or measures are placed in the alternatives collection. Whether the alternatives are swappable at runtime depends on the visualization type:

  • Axis click — Bar chart, line chart, combo chart, and scatter plot (measures only) support runtime field swapping by clicking an axis label. Discoverability is high.
  • Exploration menu — Pie chart, boxplot, and treemap support runtime field swapping through the exploration menu.
  • Not swappable — Grid chart, radar chart, Mekko chart, funnel chart, scatter plot (dimensions), and variance waterfall place excess fields in alternatives but do not support runtime swapping. The alternatives are available for manual reconfiguration in the Qlik Sense app.

Variable-driven measure switching

For bar chart, line chart, and gauge excess measures, QV2QS creates a variable, a Pick() expression that selects one measure based on the variable value, and a variable input control placed on the sheet. The end user selects the active measure through the variable input control at runtime.

Add directly

For visualization types with no hard maximum, excess fields are added as active columns or dimensions. Straight tables and pivot tables accept additional columns directly. Treemap accepts up to 15 active dimensions. Waterfall chart accepts up to 15 active measures.

Suggest chart type change

When the data shape does not fit the target visualization type, QV2QS records a suggestion to switch to a different visualization type. For example, a waterfall chart with dimensions produces a suggestion to use variance waterfall. The suggestion is recorded in the Overflow_Actions worksheet for manual follow-up.

Table column management

For straight tables with many columns, QV2QS can apply additional strategies beyond adding columns directly:

  • Column picker — QV2QS enables the Column Picker feature (Appearance > Presentation) so that end users can toggle column visibility at runtime.
  • Conditional column visibility — QV2QS applies a Show column if expression to individual columns for programmatic conditional visibility based on a variable or expression.

Trellis grid expansion

QlikView trellis charts display a fixed grid of mini-charts (columns multiplied by rows). QlikView truncates dimension values that exceed the grid size. The Qlik Sense trellis container requires the maximum charts setting to accommodate all distinct values of the faceting dimension, or the container does not render correctly. When the number of distinct values exceeds the QlikView grid size, QV2QS increases the maximum charts setting to fit all values. The value is rounded up to the nearest multiple of the column count so the grid fills evenly.

Not applicable

Some overflow combinations are structurally invalid for the target visualization type (for example, dimensions on a gauge). No overflow action is applied in these cases.

The Overflow_Actions worksheet in the Excel conversion report lists every overflow action applied during conversion.
