Detecting child semantic links automatically

The semantic mapping tool can automatically detect child semantic links by name at any level from the database schema to tables and columns based on the physical name matching.

This method is for database models only and is not the equivalent of the bulk mapping for data mapping. In a semantic mapping, the detection mechanism is used to generate links at schema, table and column levels at the time you are editing the mapping. If a new table or column is created, you have to edit the semantic mapping again and perform the detection in the UI.

Before you begin

You have been assigned an object role with the Metadata Editing capability.

Procedure

  1. Go to MANAGE > Configuration.
  2. Select an existing semantic mapping or create a new one from the data model to the database.
  3. Open the semantic mapping.
  4. Go to the Mapping Editor tab.
  5. Navigate to a schema in the source model and the target one.
  6. Drag and drop the schema from the source to the target.
  7. Click YES to perform the detection of the child links.
  8. Specify the matching options.
    The case sensitivity for the name matching is enabled by default.
    You can add prefixes or suffixes to be ignored during the matching process.
  9. Click Detect links.
    A message displays with the amount of new child links added automatically.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Right-click a table on the side of the target model and select Show Object Definitions to verify that the auto detection of the child semantic links succeeded.

Results

The business name and description displayed in the Overview tab of the target model (database) are now inferred from the logical name and description of the source model (data model).
