Creating the Qlik Sense app

When you have prepared your QlikView documents for conversion, you can run the converter tool and create Qlik Sense apps.

Creating Qlik Sense apps using Qlik converter tool consists of several steps:

  • Creating a conversion project by setting up your QlikView documents and dropping them into the converter tool.
  • Inspecting the objects found in the QlikView document, renaming where necessary, and selecting which you require for the app you are creating.
  • Creating and checking the Qlik Sense app.

Create QlikView document conversion projects

Set your documents up for conversion

  1. Copy any QlikView documents that you want to convert to a folder you can access from the converter tool.
  2. Collect any credentials you may need to set up data connections following conversion.
  3. Make sure there is enough storage space for the Qlik Sense apps that will be created. A generated app will be about the same size as the original QlikView document.

Run the converter tool

  1. Launch Dev Hub. From the hub in Qlik Sense or Qlik Sense Desktop, click Dev Hub Repair.

The Dev Hub start page is displayed in your browser window.

  2. Click the QlikView converter tab.
  3. Drag a QVW file into the tool. The QlikView document is processed. It is at this point that the objects (assets) are converted for use in Qlik Sense, but the app is not yet created. Click Close when the processing has finished.

The name of the conversion project appears in the QlikView documents panel on the left-hand side.

  4. Add more QVW files to the list of projects, if required. Click Add and select another QlikView document. It will be added to the list of projects.
  5. Click the name of the project that you want to work on. All available assets from the QlikView document are displayed in tabs. They have now been converted into Qlik Sense master items (visualizations, measures, dimensions), and variables. There is also a tab for any unconverted objects.

When you next open the converter tool, you will be able to continue your work on your projects without having to reconvert the original QVW files.

Review the objects in a conversion project

Click on a QlikView project name to see the converted objects it contains. As well as the tab for Visualizations, Dimensions, Measures, Variables, and Unconverted objects, there is a tab Selected items, which contains all the items that will be added as master items to the Qlik Sense app when you create it.

You can review the objects converted in the tool. You can rename visualizations, dimensions, and measures. If you change any object's name, the new name will be used in the Qlik Sense app when it is created. Choose descriptive names so the objects are easy to identify in the app. For example, you could rename an expression that was originally count([Employee Name]) to Number of Employees. If you are building a complex app with many sheets, consider using a naming scheme that takes into account all of the objects.

Review the items on each tab. Further information about each tab is given in the following list.

  • Visualizations tab:

    • In the visualizations tab, objects that have a direct equivalent in Qlik Sense will be marked as selected, by default.

    • Other objects, such as listboxes are not selected by default because how they are used in QlikView is different from Qlik Sense. There may be a different way to achieve a similar effect in Qlik Sense. For example, you could use the selections tool in Qlik Sense to do what you might want to do with listboxes in QlikView.

  • Dimensions and Measures tabs:

    • In these tabs , all converted objects that can be included in the app are selected by default. If you clear a selection on a dimension, for example, it will be bundled with the app (so it can be used to create any visualization it is used in, but it will not be available as a master item in the app. You can create any such fields as master items in Qlik Sense later, if required.

  • Variables tab:

    • All variables are exported the Qlik Sense app. You cannot clear these selections. Variables can be removed later in Qlik Sense, if required.

  • Unconverted objects tab

    • Consider how you want to handle the objects that have not been converted. These objects will not be available in the Qlik Sense app that you create. You may want to manually recreate unconverted objects in Qlik Sense.

  • Selected items panel:

    • The items that will appear in the Qlik Sense app as master items. Each part of the panel shows a count of the number of items selected on each tab and the total number of items on that tab.

Any changes you make to items in a project will be available whenever you open in it again. However, the original QVW file from which it was converted will not be changed.

Create and check the Qlik Sense app

When you have reviewed the converted objects and selected items, you are ready to create the app.

Information noteConversion will fail if you are creating a new app with the same name as an already published app. To avoid this, you must rename either the QVW or the published app.
  1. Click Create app. The app is created using the name of the QlikView document that you converted. It can be opened in the Qlik Sense Enterprise or Qlik Sense Desktop hub, depending on your installation.

Warning noteAfter the app has been created, the create button changes to Update app. If you click it again, the existing version of the app will be updated.
  2. Confirm successful creation of your app by opening Qlik Sense and locating the app in the hub. It will use the same name as the original QlikView document.

At this point the converted items exist as master visualizations in the Qlik Sense app. It will however not yet contain sheets and visualizations. You create these yourself, as required, from the master items.

Adding sheets and recreating the equivalent visualizations to the QlikView document may require further work, depending on the QlikView document.

Completing your app after conversion

When you are researching the behavior of your QlikView document in the converter tool, you may want to recreate the app in the converter tool several times, using different combinations of visualizations, dimensions, and measures. This allows you to assess what works best.

Warning noteIf you change the combination of items in your conversion project and click Update app, the previous version of the app will be updated. To avoid this, rename the app in the Qlik Sense hub before you create a new version.
