Connecting to data sources
Data connections provide a way to save shortcuts to the data sources you commonly use. Data sources can be databases, local files, remote files, and web files. When you select data, you can either create a new data connection, or use an existing data connection:
-
Add data in the data manager.
You can add new data to your app quickly, and get assistance with creating associations.
-
Data connections in the data load editor.
You can select data from a new or existing data connection, or use the script to load data from a data connection. You can also edit existing data connections.
Data connection types
Qlik Sense provides connectors to access multiple types of data sources.
Many of the connectors that access these data sources are built into Qlik Sense, while others can be added. Each type of data connection has specific settings that you need to configure.
Qlik Sense built-in connectors
-
ODBC connections through DSN.
See: ODBC
-
ODBC connections using Qlik database connectors:
- Apache Hive
- Cloudera Impala
- IBM DB2
- Microsoft SQL Server
- MySQL Enterprise
- Oracle
- PostgreSQL
- Sybase ASE
- Teradata
-
OLE DB database connections
See: OLE DB
-
Files in local and network file folders
-
Web files located on a web URL.
-
The Attached files folder, which you cannot delete or edit, contains files that are uploaded and attached to the app. (not available in Qlik Sense Desktop)
-
Qlik DataMarket (not available in data load editor)
-
REST API connections
-
Salesforce.com connections
Additional Qlik Sense connectors
These additional connectors are obtained from www.qlik.com. Log on with a registered customer or partner account and select Support. On the Qlik Support page, select Customer Downloads and then select the Connector tab.
- Database connections through ODBC drivers licensed by Qlik.
- SAP Netweaver
Third-party connectors
With third-party connectors you can connect to data sources that are not directly supported by Qlik Sense. Third-party connectors are developed using the QVX SDK or supplied by third-party developers. In a standard Qlik Sense installation you will not have any third-partyconnectors available.
Where is the data connection stored?
Connections are stored in the repository database by the Qlik Sense Repository Service. In a Qlik Sense server deployment, you manage data connections with the Qlik Management Console. The Qlik Management Console allows you to delete data connections, set access rights and perform other system administration tasks.
In Qlik Sense Desktop, all connections are saved in the app without encryption.
Limitations
It is not possible to name a data connection 'DM'. This name is reserved by the built-in Qlik DataMarket connector.
