Connecting to a data model

Selecting data from a Qlik Big Data Index data model is a two-step process. First, the QBDI Selector creates a connection to a big data source that has been indexed with Qlik Big Data Index. Second, the Selector opens an interface that uses Qlik Sense field selectors with the full green-white-grey inference model to browse and select from the full set of fields in an indexed data model.

The QBDI Selector is built into Qlik Sense. It appears in the list of data sources in the Data load editor. From there, Qlik Sense app developers use it to load traditional Qlik in-memory apps.

When QBDI is selected from the list of data sources, the Create new QBDI connection dialog opens. The dialog contains the following property fields required to establish the connection.

Table of property fields in QBDI connection dialog
Property Description
Host The name or IP address of the server running the QSL (Qlik Selection Language) Manager.
Port

The number of the server port through which the QSL Manager communicates.

Information noteNote that the port at the end of the BDI CONNECT statement is the port on which the QSL Manager Service listens and not the port on which the QSL RegEx or Indexing Registry Services are listening. Port 55000 is the default for the QSL Manager Service, but that can be changed.
Data model The name of the indexed data model from which data is to be selected.
Enable mutual SSL/TLS

You can enable secure communication for the connection using a password protected certificate which is stored as a Kubernetes secret. You need to upload the certificate as a PFX file, and enter the password of the certificate.

For information about creating the certificate, see Secure communication between Qlik Sense and the index cluster.

PFX file: PFX file containing the packaged certificate.

PFX file password: Password of the packaged certificate that is stored in the uploaded PFX file.

Information noteSecure communication on connection level is not available in Qlik Sense Enterprise on Windows. You need to set up security globally, see Secure communication between Qlik Sense and the index cluster.
Name A name the user assigns to identify the connection when it is created.

The Qlik Big Data Index runtime services must all be running before the connection can be established, and the indexes must be preloaded.

Once a connection is created, it appears with its assigned name in the list of data connections:
