メッセージは、送信されるデータの抽象的な定義を表します。メッセージは、いくつかのタイプシステム内の定義に関連付けられる論理的なパーツで構成されます。WSDLメッセージは、(ポートタイプ内の)オペレーションの入力、出力、およびエラーエレメントで参照できるトップレベルオブジェクトです。
