# Setting indicators on columns

After defining the columns to be analyzed, set either system or custom indicators for each of the defined columns.

The second step after defining the columns to be analyzed is to set statistics indicators for each of the defined columns.

Information noteNote: You can also use Java custom indicators when analyzing columns in a delimited file on the condition that a Java custom indicator is already created.

### Before you begin

An analysis of a delimited file is open in the analysis editor in the Profiling perspective of Talend Studio.

### Procedure

1. Follow the procedure outlined in [Defining the columns to be analyzed](https://help.qlik.com/talend/en-US/studio-user-guide/8.0/defining-columns-to-be-analyzed).
2. From the Indicators menu, double-click a column. The Indicator Selection dialog box opens.
3. Click the indicators you want to apply to the columns.

   In this example, you want to set the Simple indicators on all columns, the Text indicators on the first\_name column and the Soundex Frequency on the first\_name column as well.

   Information noteNote: You can set the Text indicators on a column only if its data mining type is set to nominal. Otherwise, these indicators will be grayed out in the Indicator Selection dialog box.

   The selected indicators are attached to the analyzed columns in the Indicators menu.

### Procedure

1. Follow the procedures outlined in [Defining the columns to be analyzed](https://help.qlik.com/talend/en-US/studio-user-guide/8.0/defining-columns-to-be-analyzed) and [Setting indicators on columns](https://help.qlik.com/talend/en-US/studio-user-guide/8.0/setting-indicators-on-columns).
2. From the Indicators menu, click ![Settings](https://help.qlik.com/talend/en-US/studio-user-guide/Resources/images/controls.svg) next to the indicator.
3. In the dialog box that opens, set the parameters for the given indicator.

   Indicators settings dialog boxes differ according to the parameters specific for each indicator. For more information about different indicator parameters, see [Indicator parameters](https://help.qlik.com/talend/en-US/studio-user-guide/8.0/indicator-parameters).
4. Click Finish to close the dialog box.
