Managing data

You need to connect to a data source before your can create visualizations in a Qlik Sense app. You can preview and manipulate your data in the Data manager. When you are ready, load your data into your app.

Connecting to your data

If your data is in a file on your computer, you can upload it into your cloud using DataFiles.

Adding data from uploaded data files

If your data is in a database, you can use a connector.

Connecting to data sources

If you are working in a shared space, you can add data files and connections directly to the shared space.

Adding and loading your data

Once you have connected your data, Qlik Sense gives you a preview in the Data manager associations window. You can add more data sources, transform the data, and associate tables.

When you are done preparing your data, click the Load data button. You can now use your data to create visualizations in your app.

Best practices for data modeling

Here are some things for you to consider when modeling your data.

Managing data in apps with Data manager

You can add data from data sources without learning a script language. Data selections can be edited, and you can get assistance with creating data associations in your data model.

Connecting to data sources

Data connections provide a way to save shortcuts to the data sources you commonly use. Qlik Sense provides connectors to access multiple types of data sources, such as, databases, CSV files, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, web-based sources, REST API,, and SAP. Many of the connectors that access these data sources are built into Qlik Sense while others can be added.

Loading data with the data load script

You can build a data model with ETL (Extract, Transform & Load) processes using the Qlik Sense data load script language. The script language is powerful and enables you to perform complex transformations and creating a scalable data model.

Viewing the data model

The data model viewer provides you with an overview of the data structure of the app. You can preview data in the tables and fields in the data model viewer. You can also create dimensions and measures on-the-fly.

Best practices for data modeling

There are a number of different ways you can load your data into the Qlik Sense app, depending on how the data is structured and which data model you want to achieve.
