Downloading app content

You can download visualizations in cloud hub apps as images or PDF files. You can also download the data in a visualization as an .xlsx file. You download sheets and stories as PDF. The Download dialog lets you configure output settings.

Note:

You must allow pop-ups in your browser to download app content.

The download process will look different if you are using a touch screen device. See: Long-touch menu on touch devices.

Images

By default, an image will contain the current view of displayed data or details. You can customize the amount of data or details displayed by adjusting width and height. The preview of the image adjusts as you make your changes. Qlik Sense generates images in .png format.

PDFs

You can select PDF paper size, set landscape or portrait, and adjust the scale of objects. The previewed PDF adjusts as you make your changes. In the preview pane, you can rotate and print the PDF. You can download the entire sheet as a PDF.

There are two aspect ratio options:

Fit to page

The object is resized, but proportions remain the same. Scale is calculated by taking the minimum between object width and height that fits in the chosen page format and orientation. This means that:

  • The whole object is scaled to fit the chosen PDF page format and orientation.
  • Charts proportions are the same as you see in the browser window.
  • The sheet or visualization is printed centered in the page.
  • Resolution is affected by browser window size. A PDF printed from a browser window larger than the chosen page format may appear grainy, because the number of printed pixels is less than the original.

100% Normal size

The sheet is printed as is. This means that:

  • Chart proportions stay the same as seen in the browser window. This means visualizations may be cropped.
  • The sheet or visualization is printed centered in the page.
  • Resolution does not depend on the page format. It is the same as you see in the browser.

Data

When you download the data in visualization, the Download dialog generates an .xlsx file.

Limitations

When downloading as image:

  • Filter panes and sheet titles cannot be exported.

When downloading as PDF:

  • Third-party extensions, filter panes, and action buttons are exported as blank images.
  • Visualization extensions (custom objects) cannot be downloaded as PDFs. They can be downloaded as images.
  • Dynamic view objects are not supported. They are exported as blank images. However, unlike other unsupported chart types, dynamic charts increase download times. A sheet with many dynamic charts may timeout and fail to download.
  • There is no preview in the Download dialog if the browser does not have a PDF viewer plugin installed. This limitation does not apply when downloading stories.
  • When you export a sheet from an app with a custom theme applied, the theme is only applied to the visualizations. Styling for the sheet, such as background color, will not be applied in the exported PDF.
  • Extended sheets and custom-sized sheets may have a lower quality PDF output if the sheet is too large to clearly display on a single PDF page.

When downloading stories as PDF:

  • Stories download with the following settings:
    • Papersize: A4

    • Resolution: 200 dpi

    • Orientation: Landscape

    • Scale: Fit to page. The Storytelling 16:9 format is kept, resulting in some extra space at the bottom of the PDF,

  • All text objects use the font Arial.
  • Embedded sheets are downloaded to PDFs in their default state. Changes made to objects in embedded sheets, such as changing the orientation of a bar chart, are not included.
  • The language in text objects in the story should match the language set in the load script for the app system variable CollationLocale. If they differ, text objects in stories may not be downloaded as expected.

When downloading data:

  • Map visualization data cannot be downloaded.
  • Box plot, distribution plot and histogram data contains multiple hypercubes which would correspond to multiple sheets in Excel. When you download data, the default hypercube is only downloaded as a single sheet.
  • When downloading data from a table, styling is not preserved. This includes colors, fonts, hyperlinks and more.
  • There are some limitations to the number of rows/columns and amount of data you can download:

    • Maximum 1048566 rows.
    • Maximum 16384 columns.
    • The size of the downloaded Excel file cannot exceed 100 MB. This size will depend on the number of columns and rows and the amount of text in the cells.
