Working with apps and visualizations

This section provides you with examples of how to create sheets, variables and visualizations, how to update their properties, render their layout, publish them to a stream, unpublish them and export their data. Examples on how to remove sheets, variables and visualizations are also provided.

Create sheets

A sheet is a generic object created at app level. Sheets provide a way of structuring your ideas and purposes for your app. When you create an empty app, it is good practice to first build a structure of empty sheets, where each sheet represents an idea or a goal.

This section provides you with examples of how you can create sheets, replace some objects in an app, delete some sheets and list the sheets in an app.

This section also contains examples on how to add and remove alternate states to an app. You can create multiple states within a Qlik Sense app and apply these states to specific objects within the app. Objects in a given state are not affected by user selections in the other states.

Create sheets.

Create variables

You can create, edit and remove variables. A variable can be a string, a numeric or contains an expression.

This section provides you with examples on how to create and remove variables. In addition, you can find examples on how to list the variables in an app.

To get examples on how to set or update the properties of a variable, see Set and get properties.

Create variables.

Create visualizations

To create a visualization, you define a generic object that is one of:

  • a list object,
  • a hypercube,
  • the concatenation of several list objects
  • the concatenation of several hypercubes,
  • the combination of both list objects and hypercubes.

The generic object has a hierarchical structure meaning that it can contain children and grand children.

Once a visualization is created, you can add children to the visualization, get its properties, define new properties, update existing properties or remove some. You can publish the visualization , and export its data.

This section provides you with examples of how to create visualizations and add children to the visualizations. Examples on how to clone, publish a visualization and export its data are also provided.

A visualization is made of one or more dimensions and measures. Examples on how to create, clone or remove dimensions and measures are provided. Examples on how to change a dimension and a measure on-the-fly are also provided.

Set and get properties

Once a visualization, a variable, a sheet or an app is created, you can add new properties, update existing ones or remove some. You can get the list of properties for an app, a variable, a field or a visualization.

Set and get properties.

Render the layout

You can change the way a visualization is rendered by changing the sorting of its values, by setting some dimension limits, by drilling up and down, by collapsing or expanding the dimensions of a pivot table, by reducing the dimension values of a hypercube.

This section provides you with examples of how to render the layout of an app, a sheet, a visualization or a variable, how to invert the sort order, how to reduce the dimension values of a chart and how to set some dimension limits on the dimensions of an hypercube.

Render the layout.

Export the data of a visualization

You can export the data of a visualization. You have the choice to cancel the export request if, for example, it takes too much time.

This section provides you with examples on how to export an app and a generic object. An example on how to cancel an ongoing export request is provided.

Export data.

Publish an app or a visualization

You can publish and unpublish apps or visualizations. Apps are published to a stream. Visualizations can be published at the same time as the app is published or after.

A stream is a collection of apps that a group of users has specific access to. By default, Qlik Sense includes a stream called Everyone, in which all users have both read and publish rights.

This section provides you with examples of how to publish an app to a stream and how to publish visualizations, dimensions and measures. Examples on how to list the available streams and how to unpublish a visualization are also given.
