Objects

The Objects sheet provides an inventory of QlikView objects, sheets and expressions. Objects can be sorted by type and by labels, definitions and by QVW name.

Sheets and objects

The Object Counts chart in the Sheets & Objects section presents the total number of each type of object. When there are no current selections, Object Count is the total from all files on the scan date indicated.

When one or more files from File Name is selected, the object count represents the total of each type of object in the selected QVWs.

The Sheets, Objects, Expressions table presents objects and expression labels organized by the QVW file that contains them.

The Sheet column shows only QVWs from QlikView 11.2 SR4 or later and QlikView November 2017.

Objects are sorted by type and then by Object ID. Multiple instances of a single Object ID indicates the object has multiple expressions.

Label lists the labels for each of the expressions.

Definition shows the definition for each expression and variable. For dimensions, the definition is the field name or calculated dimension. For groups, the definition is cyclic or drill (hierarchic). For List boxes, the definition is the expression or field for the box. For a text object, the definition is the text entered in the text box.

The QVW Object Summary table provides overview data for each QVW scanned. For more detailed information about a QVW, see the Single QVD Detail section of the Complexity sheet.

Expressions

The Expressions section provides an inventory of expressions and labels and associated variables.

The Labels with Multiple Expressions bar chart can be used to sort on labels with varying numbers of expressions. When a single label is used to display the results of different expressions, confusion can arise, especially if the label is used multiple times in a single QVW.

The Expressions with Multiple Labels bar chart can be to sort on expressions with varying numbers of labels. When a single expression is used by different labels, important relationships might be missed because the results are displayed under different labels.

Recurring labels and expressions

The Expressions table presents the total number of times each expression occurs, the number of labels that use the expression, and the number of QVWs in which it appears.

QVW and object details about selected expressions are presented in the Sheets & Objects section.

Selecting an expression cross-references the labels that use the expression and the QVWs in which it is used.

The Expression Labels table presents the total number of times each label occurs, the number of lxpressions or definitions that use the label, and the number of QVWs in which it appears.

QVW and object details about selected labels are presented in the Sheets & Objects section.

Selecting a label cross-references the expressions used by the label and the QVWs in which it is used.

The Variables table presents each variable name and its definition and the number of labels that use it.

QVW and object details about selected variables are presented in the Sheets & Objects section.

Selecting a variable cross-references the labels and expressions that use the variable and the QVWs in which it is used.

Field usage

The Field Usage section provides a summary of all places where the literal text of a field name is found in expressions, labels, variables, dimensions, and field groups. With this information, a QlikView developer or administrator can quickly get a sense of how much and where different fields are used within and across QlikView apps, which is particularly important when performing an impact analysis related to the change or removal of a field or group of fields from an application.

Each of the charts on this page uses an expression pattern to identify places where the literal text of the field name exists. The pattern if(index(Item,QVWFieldName)>0,' ',0) references the specific Item defined by the given chart name.

Information noteThe field usage analysis does not evaluate variables and will only find fields spelled out exactly. For example, the charts on this page are not capable of discovering fields referenced in a variable, label or expression which is dynamically set based on field selections or input fields.

The Expressions table shows the location of the literal text string for each field in the expressions within an application.

The Labels table shows the location of fields referenced in labels. A label is defined primarily for charts, list boxes, and sheets.

The Variables table shows the location of fields explicitly referenced in user-defined and system-defined variables.

The Dimensions table shows the location of fields used as dimensions for charts.

The Groups (Dimensions) table shows the cyclic or drill-down dimension groups in which the field is contained.
